European IGR clubs have voted
overwhelmingly in favour of IGR taking an active role
in the management of the Union Cup.
The 29 IGR clubs of Europe, plus ISIRR and the World
Barbarians, participated in a vote to decide IGR’s
role in the management of the biennial European gay
rugby championships, given its significant growth
in recent years.
In a two part vote, the membership first voted 48
votes to 5 in favour of IGR involvement. The level
of involvement was then determined using a single
transferable vote system, with the members giving
their first, second and third choice preferences of
three proposed options. The successful option 'B'
1. Guidance and advice to the host city
2. Management of the bidding process
3. Tournament structure (establishing a Tournament
Liaison Committee to undertake this role).
IGR Chairman, Andrew 'Fuzz' Purchas said of the
vote outcome, "The phenomenal expansion of the
Union Cup in recent tournaments has been fantastic
to watch. IGR looks forward to assisting its continued
growth and the Union Cup being a part of IGR’s
international tournaments in 4 continents."
The IGR Trustees have reached out to Dublin's Emerald
Warriors, hosts of the next Union Cup in 2019. Both
parties are greatly looking forward to a strong and
positive working relationship over the next two years,
with the focus on creating the best possible tournament
for Europe's gay and inclusive rugby community..
